Kayak Launch: Dick Gilmur Memorial Shoreline in Commencement Bay

One of my favorite places to kayak is Commencement Bay. There is a great kayak launch, you get a beautiful view of the Port and the Olympic Mountains, there are miles of shore to explore, but the best part are the seals! In the summer, there are lots of seals that enjoy resting and sunbathing in the secluded spot. They are quite curious and get close enough to your kayak to say hello. It adds a nice touch and gives me a little boost of adrenaline  I go back and forth between being afraid the seal with attack  thanks to Arrested Development, (This show is a great show and you should check it out! The seal attack occurs on episode 12 of season 2 http://www.hulu.com/arrested-development) and being excited and humbled to be so close to a wild animal in it’s natural environment. This is a great, easy place to kayak and perfect for beginners.
